History of KDHX

KDHX Community Media is the name for the operations of the Double Helix Corporation, a 501(c)3 non-profit arts and educational organization with a mission to build community through media, with diverse and independent voices that enrich the perspectives of our audiences. We promote civic and cultural participation by providing the tools, technology, and training vital to informed, creative expression. The Double Helix Corporation was formed after the demise of KDNA, a countercultural community-radio station that operated in Saint Louis's Gaslight Square district in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The corporation is independent of any governmental entity and is not affiliated with any religious or educational organization.

At KDHX Community Media, we believe that mass media is not a passive system through which audiences see and hear only what is transmitted to them. We believe that electronic media can provide tools for community and artistic growth when audiences become participants in the process rather than remaining mere consumers of sight, sound and information.

KDHX plays a unique role by using media to promote civic and cultural participation in Saint Louis. It is a place where artists express themselves; diverse voices speak and the marketplace of ideas flourishes. Participation in mass media requires an ongoing commitment to locally produced programs on subjects of local interest. Much of the KDHX's programming is developed in cooperation with area groups and organizations or is created by local, independent producers.

We believe that a core professional staff, working with volunteers of varied backgrounds and interests, offers a unique and exciting service of media communications for all citizens. Community media recognizes the existence of a wide variety of cultural roots, and the activities of KDHX reflect that wealth of diversity. Our programming is as rich and entertaining as the variety of people who make up the community.

Since community media depends on locally produced programming, KDHX maintains educational programs through which individuals and groups can formally and informally develop the technical skills necessary to create quality programs. KDHX volunteers have created radio and television programming for over twenty years. As digital technology opens new media channels, we are working to help our community make the best use of those channels.

KDHX is unique among media because of its purpose, philosophy and organizational structure. There is a large and supportive body of area residents eager to become involved, and we have the great opportunity and obligation to broaden the scope of community media in the Saint Louis area.

Through collaborations with area arts, civic and cultural organizations, KDHX broadens and enriches the perspectives of both our audiences and our producers. It is a place where people from all parts of our community learn to make their own media, using skills, tools and technologies to present great music, new ideas, local arts and the works of civic, cultural and advocacy organizations that help make Saint Louis a better place.
