Green Strum: An introduction

Green Strum: An introduction Corey Woodruff

Cigar-box guitars, pie-plate banjos, a bass made from an old speaker and a dobro made from welded pipe: These are just a few of the instruments created by Green Strum.

Believing that music and sustainability go hand in hand, Kelly Wells and Ryan Spearman began to explore the possibilities in 2010. What they discovered was that you can make music out of anything, even the stuff you find discarded in your back alley.

As Ryan began building recycled instruments in his basement, he became inspired to prove that the artistic experience can be challenged and enhanced with a bit of creativity. To that end, he produced St. Louis' first green CD, "Get Along Home". Made with 100% recycled instruments, the album was written, recorded, mixed, mastered and produced right here in St. Louis.

The concept of Green Strum took flight and morphed into a project that seeks to inspire, teach and showcase the possibilities that occur at the intersection of arts and sustainability. Through workshops, demonstrations and Green Strum Band performances, Green Strum shows that music can be accessible, creative and sustainable.

Green Strum was welcomed into KDHX in 2012 and continues to offer educational opportunities in the St. Louis area. Look for Green Strum at local sustainability events like St. Louis Earth Day and get inspired to learn and create your own local, sustainable music.
