What is folk music? There are a lot of theories but one thing is certain, and that is that at it's heart is community.

The sharing of song and tune, the passing of musical knowledge from one person to the next, is a tradition that the Folk School takes seriously. Twice a year students of the Folk School get to showcase the skills and knowledge they've acquired in their recent eight-week class at the Folk School during the biannual Student Showcase held at Off Broadway.

For many, it's the first time they've performed on a stage and it's an evening of pride as they show off their abilities to an appreciative crowd of friends and family. Last Wednesday evening was no exception -- over 100 students graced the stage at Off Broadway and entertained and inspired the crowd. The applause was great and as the evening ended, the sense of passion and excitement was palpable as a new group of so-called folkies took a firm place in the folk music community.
