St. Louisans have long had a special love affair with beer. For nearly two centuries this bubbly brew has invigorated our taste buds and our local economy. In recent years many microbrewers have emerged as regional favorites, as well as many annual beer-themed events such as pub crawls, beer runs and craft beer tours.

St. Louis' Craft Beer Week, held July 29 through August 6, was created in 2009 by local brewer Mike Sweeney. This year's assemblage included breweries, distributors, restaurants, bars, retailers and beer fans, all celebrating their love of craft beer. Many of the events were fundraisers for local non-profit organizations.

The Fifth Annual Garbage Bag Gala, held on Saturday, July 16, featured wearable creations from 23 area designers.

The event was organized by Echelon, a group of young professionals within the Salvation Army, who provide opportunities for young adults to interact with the organization. All proceeds from the event went to support Salvation Army programs that provide help for the homeless, including hot meals, shelter, spiritual comfort and emergency aid.

The top prize went to fashion designer Barbara Hultman, with a creation worn by model Galina Angheluta, utilizing plastic black straws.

TrapezeSTL, now in its third season, is part of Circus Harmony, the non-profit organization that uses circus arts to motivate social change.

Since mid-March, dozens of cyclists have met in Carondelet Park each week for the 2016 Vann Knight Tuesday Night World Championship Criterium Training Series. Although aspiring professional racers use the weekly meet-up to improve on their performance, the Tuesday night event is broken up into several race categories to accommodate everyone from die-hard cyclists to first-time racers; anyone with a bike, a helmet and a USA Cycling racing license, which can be purchased on site, can participate. Sponsored and coordinated by Big Shark, the weekly races at Carondelet Park will continue through the end of August.
