From Roy Kasten:

"What is soul?" asked Ben E. King and, in a somewhat hazier fashion, George Clinton. It's what speaks to me in music, regardless of genre, style, and identity, and which speaks most soulfully in song and voice, in melody and rhythm. And this year it spoke lushly, from the warm whispers of Bedouine to the impeccable arrangements of Yola's debut, from Bruce's redemption-by-way-of-strings to Tonina Saputo's mercy-finding-and-giving jazz fusions. These albums and these songs aren't just my playlist choices of 2019; they'll be forever part of my personal soundtrack -- and maybe yours too.
