An Old North Harvest

The North City Farmers’ Market, open every Saturday morning through October, isn’t your typical open air produce fest. Don’t go looking for organic kiwis. Greens and herbs and radishes and more greens dominate the vegetation, but what it lacks in selection the market makes up for in genuine community spirit. The feeling of people coming together to strengthen and create community was everywhere. Old North community groups spread the gospel of healthy eating, sold small tomato and pepper plants, a few gourds, hand-crafted items, and the dependably delicious Black Bear Bakery had baskets of breads and focaccia. A chef was grilling, and offered up a demonstration of his secrets (tin-foil-wrapped-bricks weighing down the smoked chicken breasts), and then a serve-yourself lunch, devoured instantly. The roasted red cabbages were to die for.
I had a terrific time this past Saturday morning, seeing familiar KDHX faces and making new friends. And Crown Candy is just across the street from the market; when it comes to brain freezes, a chocolate malt is definitive.
Harvest Sessions, the free summer and fall concert series presented by KDHX and the Whitaker Foundation, has expanded to take in Old North as well as Tower Grove. You can check out the schedule for all the shows here, watch a Flickr slideshow and view a couple of videos I shot of the Dock Ellis Band and LeAndra below and after the jump.
See you at the market!
