R.I.P. Don E. Curtis, maestro of the pedal steel guitar
The St. Louis music community was stunned this week by the news of Don E. Curtis’ passing. Curtis suffered a massive heart attack while hiking. He was 53 years old.
Curtis was part of the heart and soul of country music in St. Louis. He played with Commander Cody and Bobby Helms (among many, many others), was a regular at Stovall’s Grove Saloon, helped build the International Steel Guitar Convention, taught and mentored many steel players at Scottie’s Music, and held a residency with Paul Jarvis at Riddle’s Cafe on Delmar in St. Louis.
Along with being one of the finest pedal steel players in the world, he was also a hell of a drummer, a great supporter of KDHX and a warm, generous man.
