All Aboard for Fun Times: St. Louis show highlights for 12/7-12/8

All Aboard for Fun Times Train

Some tough calls this weekend — including some dueling holidays shows Saturday.

Friday, December 7

The Incurables / Phonocaptors / Jimmy Lee King
Off Broadway 3509 Lemp 8:30 door/9 start $10 (+3 under 21/all-ages) Smoke-free

The Incurables return from a long hiatus to release a new album, “The Fine Art of Distilling,” and perform their glam-tinged, melodic rock.

Returning from an even longer time away are the Phonocaptors for a reunion (rumored to be the last) performing powerful rock with plenty of swagger.

Jimmy Lee King is a Dayton, Ky. modern country act who seems pretty out of place on this bill.

The Black Shades / Bruiser Queen / Thee Fine Lines
The Heavy Anchor 5226 Gravois 9 start $5 (21+ only) Smoke-free

Boisterous garage-ish rock from Bowling Green, Ky.’s the Black Shades.

High-energy pop-punk sounds from Bruiser Queen.

Thee Fine Lines are a fun garage/psych group that’s two fellows from Springfield, Mo. joined by bassist Kevin Schneider (The Blind Eyes).

Saturday, December 8

You can help KDHX fill their coffers, while you fill your stomach, at a brunch benefit this morning at Black Bear Bakery (2639 Cherokee), running 9-2, for $10.

There will probably be a set of swing-styled music by Wack-A-Doo from 10 to 12.

Celia’s Yuletide Express / Spectator / Milktooth
Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust 9-12 Free (minors only with an adult) Smoke-free

CYE is a group of shiny, happy people celebrating the season in a secular manner, fronted by Celia Shacklett (Fire Dog).

Lush ensemble pop sounds from Spectator.

I didn’t have a chance to preview Nashville’s Milktooth.

Soulful rockers Brothers Lazaroff offer their 2nd Annual Hanukkah Hullabaloo benefit at Off Broadway.

They’ll be joined by Will Soll’s Klezmer Conspiracy, James Stone Goodman and the Vaad (including members of Magnolia Summer, Melody Den and the Bottle Rockets), while DJ Goldie will have records spinning like dreidels between acts.

Door at 9 for this 9:30 show, with a $8 cover (3 more for under-21). Bring your appetite — there will be latkes!

Your humble servant,

Dick Caveat
