Concert photos: Dum Dum Girls, Minks and Dirty Beaches at Billiken Club, Wednesday, February 23
Dum Dum Girls let the anticipation build, waiting until 11:15 p.m. to take the stage at the Billiken Club. The buildup was not wasted as the 4 piece careened through their low-fi, fuzzed out set. The headliner was preceded by the Minks, a melodic sextet from Brooklyn, and the Dirty Beaches.
Don’t miss the Live at KDHX session with Dum Dum Girls, recorded right before the show on February 23.

Concert photos: Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds at Off Broadway, Sunday, February 13
Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds rocked through a Sunday night set at Off Broadway. The Pink Monkey Birds — Kiki Solis, Jesse Roberts and Ron Miller — laid down soulful grooves song after song, as Kid tore through new material from the band’s upcoming album Gorilla Rose, along with classic songs from the Cramps and Thee Midniters’ version of “I Found a Peanut.”

Concert photos: Chatham County Line at Off Broadway, Saturday, February 5
Saturday night Chatham County Line filled Off Broadway with sweet bluegrass harmonies and the impressive songwriting of Dave Wilson. With instruments completely unplugged, the 4-piece band huddled around a microphone and took turns showcasing its vast vocal and instrumental skills. The band captivated the room with its expansive sound; if there were any complaints it was only that the evening ended too soon.

Concert photos: Samantha Crain, Bobby Bare Jr. and Langhorne Slim at Off Broadway, Saturday, January 29
Three outstanding acts played to a sold-out room at Off Broadway last night. Samantha Crain started off the night with pared-down versions of her songs, accompanied only by Daniel Foulks on fiddle. The Oklahoma natives did not disappoint, and warmed the crowd up nicely for what was to come. Bobby Bare Jr. followed, upping the tempo and singing songs about his “emotions and feelings” at a rock & roll pace. By the time Langhorne Slim made it on stage, the energy in the room had risen to fever pitch. Slim’s signature swagger inspired the men to cheer and the women to swoon as he played for over an hour.

Concert photos: Dale Watson at Off Broadway, Sunday, January 23
It certainly didn’t feel like a Sunday evening as Dale Watson took the stage at Off Broadway last night for a KDHX benefit. Veteran honky tonkers, Watson and the Lone Stars inspired too much toe tappin’, boot stompin’ and two steppin’ to believe that anyone would have to be up for work in the morning. The crowd happily took to the dance floor, called out requests and danced away the winter blues.

Concert photos: Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps, the Velvet Lapelles and the Jump Starts at Off Broadway, Monday, January 3
If last night was any indication of what is in store for live music in 2011, this is going to be an outstanding year. Local duo, Jump Starts, opened the night with an fun, energetic set with Sarah Ross on drums and Justin Johnson on guitar. The Velvet Lapelles followed by filling the stage with stocking cap clad musicians and beautiful melodies. Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps rounded out the night with her catchy folk-pop tunes, inspiring the delighted crowd to dance happily late into Monday night.

Concert photos: Jill Andrews, Cassie Morgan and the Lonely Pine and Jailbox at Off Broadway, Thursday, December 9
When talented singer songwriters like Jill Andrews and Cassie Morgan share a bill, there is no doubt that the audience is in for a special treat. Both women create powerful lyrics and have enchanting voices that can put a hush over a noisy bar. They each debuted new songs during their sets for the delighted audience and both delivered flawless performances. The only complaint at the end of the night was that it didn’t last long enough. Jailbox, from Perryville, Mo., warmed up the crowd and opened the evening.
