With stage smoke leaving a layer of haze in the Firebird on Thursday night, the Black Lips combed through the fog and unleashed their in your face garage rock style for an appreciative crowd. With each song it seemed the band was picking up their own intensity, trying to get the young rowdies to be a bit more of a rebellious audience; however, save for the few cans of sprayed beer and the occasional crowd surfer, it was a relatively tame show. With that said, the Black Lips were an impressive bunch. They turned it up. They cranked out thick and dark rock and roll. They interacted with their fans. And they put on a pretty solid show.

Opening the evening were the Vivian Girls, who showcased a knack for writing songs that draw you in slowly and then hook you with their let-it-all-go attitude and style. The female 3 piece featured a very raw guitar sound that is awesomely dirty sounding at times, and then clean and sweet just a few notes later. Not afraid to move across the stage and use the space to their advantage, the Vivian Girls may look like sweethearts, but their sound will punch you in the mouth without thinking twice.

Concert photos: John Doe and Jill Sobule at Off Broadway, Friday, April 15

Taking the stage before an intimate crowd at Off Broadway, John Doe and Jill Sobule played an 80 minute set that seemed like you were watching two old pals jamming out in their living room.

Although you may not think of these two as a likely duo, Doe and Sobule performed an excellent set of tunes that was part acoustic, part electric, but always right on point. Filling the room with a beautiful blend of guitar work and vocal harmony, these seasoned veterans had the crowd singing along to many of the songs, and laughing at the off the cuff stories they told in between numbers. With a very apparent comfort level playing together on stage, they took turns commanding the spotlight, and put on a show that was extremely fitting for an early Friday evening.

Concert photos: Band of Heathens and David Mayfield Parade at Off Broadway, Saturday, March 5

Band of Heathens came to Off Broadway on Saturday night and put on a quality show for a supportive fan base here in St Louis. The Austin band extended its jamming to showcase fine, extremely tight musicianship throughout the set. Playing some fan favorites and looking like they were having a good ol’ time, the set turned into a big sing-along by the time the clock struck 12.

Opening the evening was the lively Nashville band, the David Mayfield Parade. Mayfield, who is a brilliant musician, worked the stage while playing some of the finest 6 string I’ve seen in some time. With playful banter in between songs, a band who smiled the entire evening while tastefully accompanying Mayfield and a frontman who has no shame in turning out a few dance moves, the David Mayfield Parade stole the evening.

Concert photos: JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound and the Green Room Rockers at Off Broadway, Friday, February 25

Chicago soul group JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound set the stage on fire at Off Broadway last night. With Brooks working the room like a seasoned professional, he and his band turned out a hot set that had the people’s heads bobbin’ and rumps shakin’, as soul-era sounds filled the room. With a near theatrical presence behind the microphone, Brooks and crew deliver a jumpin’ good time.

Midwestern ska fellas, the Green Room Rockers, started the evening on the up-strum. Playing an up-tempo set that had the feel of a Jamaican dancehall, the band brought it proper with amplified good vibes. With mostly original tunes, GRR also turned in a funky cover of a Toots and the Maytals song, which sent dancers into a frenzy. This is a band that will give it to you on the one drop.
