Uncontrollable Urge, 88.1fm KDHX, Wednesdays From 10am-High Noon, that’s when I reach for my revolver.
Eugene Chadbourne will be coming to St. Louis to play two shows at the Schlafly Tap Room on Thursday June 4, 2009 at 8 and 10pm, no cover. He will be in St. Louis the day before and will do a live in studio performance on Uncontrollable Urge, airing Wednesday June 3 between 10am and Noon.
Dr. Eugene Chadbourne mixes country, jazz, folk, rock and experimental music, heck he even plays a rake. He released his first album, VOLUME ONE; SOLO ACOUSTIC GUITAR, in 1975 and has since released more albums than two could count on all their digits combined.
As part of their 50th Anniversary Season, on Saturday, March 7 @ 7:30 p.m. New Music Circle welcomes percussionist Gino Robair to St. Louis for a performance of his modern opera I, Norton at Mildred Bastian Theater, 5600 Oakland Ave. on the campus of Forest Park Community College.
I, Norton which is based on the life of Norton I “the first and only emperor of the United States”, brings Bay Area musician Gino Robair to St. Louis for a rare appearance. Joshua Norton on September 17, 1859 proclaimed, “at the request of the citizens of these United States, I…declare myself Emperor.” This real life Bay Area Emperor, immortalized in Mark Twain’s THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, abolished Congress, decreed bridges be built between Oakland and San Francisco, enjoyed free passage by rail and ship, printed and used his own money, and corresponded with kings, queens, and presidents.
New Music Circle says “I, Norton will feature 20 performers, including many of St. Louis’s most highly regarded musicians. The ensemble itself is assembled in a unique way for each concert. In performance, I, Norton takes the shape of an improvised collage structure that combines hand cues, graphic scores, memory-based improvisational structures, and fully notated works.” Click here for more details about the show.
In addition to his live appearance, Gino Robair will be performing in the studio at KDHX on Wednesday, March 4 between 10am and 12 Noon, for a live studio session and interview with me on on Uncontrollable Urge. So please tune in. Gino Robair plays and records with several musicians in ensembles including Tom Waits, John Zorn, Pink Mountain, The New Black, Splatter Trio, Peter James and Michael Zapruder

Uncontrollable Urge will celebrate the music of the Hanson Brothers this week. I’ll spend the second hour of Uncontrollable Urge on Wednesday December 10, 2008 (11am-Noon CST) playing music from their new live album IT’S A LIVING as well as their 3 studio albums and EPs. The Hanson Brothers will be in Columbia, MO December 11, 2008 at Mojo’s. See previous post for details. Total Goombah!
On Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 11:00 am, Uncontrollable Urge and KDHX were in for a real treat when musicians from the opposite side of the world arrived to share their music with us. Alash hail from Tuva, a country about the size of Montana with the population equal to the City of St. Louis. These 4 men brought with them their traditional stringed instruments and drums and most of all their voices to play songs unlike most any other music, although you can hear similar sounds from many traditions. They practice throat singing; this creates sounds similar to droning instruments like bag pipes. Give a listen to the in-studio session here:
And finally a boyhood appearance of Alash member, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar and master Tuvan singer, Kongar-ol Ondar on the Chevy Chase Show.
Uncontrollable Urge heroes, Hanson Brothers, will be in Columbia, MO at Mojo’s on Dec. 11, 2008. For the uninitiated, hailing from the Great White North, Hanson Brothers are beer drinking, hockey playing, Ramones worshiping alter-egos of NoMeansNo, whom you can be sure to hear most every week sometime between 10am & Noon on Wednesdays.
This Wednesday (12/3/08) on Uncontrollable Urge, I will be joined in studio by Alash, a Tuvan band of throat singers currently touring the US. Uncontrollable Urge airs from 10am – 12 Noon every Wednesday on KDHX 88.1 FM. We expect the band around 10:30am.
Alash will be performing 3 concerts in St. Louis:
Tues 12/2/08 @ Webster U. in Sunnen Lounge @ Noon, free
Weds 12/3/08 @ First Congregational Church of Webster Groves, 10 West Lockwood Ave @ 7pm, free, 314-962-0475
Thurs 12/4/08 @ The Chapel 6238 Alexander Dr. (just off Wydown & Skinker, it’s a diagonal street) @ 8pm $10
