Description

The St. Louis Chamber Chorus 2013-2014 concert season begins with The Ancients Speak: Greek. The intimacy of Sappho, the pathos of Sophocles & Euripides, and the exclamations of the Greek Anthology inform the music of Ned Rorem and Ildebrando Pizzetti, Virgil Thomson and Edward Elgar. The original ancient text set by Clare Maclean contrasts with Calvocoressi’s English translations that bring us to the modern era; they are the basis of the haunting Five Greek Folk Songs, arranged by Sir Arnold Bax.
