Dances of India 40th Anniversary Performance--Devi of the Ashes--Cinderella in India

Dances of India, St. Louis' venerable classical Indian dance company, presents its 40th season in 2017-2018.

Its colorful centerpiece is Devi of the Ashes--or, Cinderella in India. The beloved fairy-tale is given a spicy Indian spin in this fully narrated, original script.
How did princesses in ancient India find their prince? And what do Indian dancers do about a glass slipper when they all dance barefoot? Is that an accident waiting to happen? Come and find this all out!

Don't miss this spectacular, prismatic feast of music and rhythm which St. Louis Magazine listed as one of the Top 10 Performing Arts Events this Autumn:

Traditional Indian dances will also be performed alongside Devi of the Ashes. Guest artists include contemporary French-Canadian dancer Patrick Suzeau-- who will perform a piece fused of Odissi (a North Indian classical style) and contemporary Western movement-- Kiran Rajagopalan, a professional classical Indian dancer from New York, and Sanjay Shantaram, Artistic Director of ShivaPriya School of Dance in Bangalore, India.

And the dozens and dozens of members of the Dances of India company, trained by Artistic Director Asha Prem, will perform as well, in the dynamic, intricately expressive style of classical Indian dance known as Bharata Natyam.

Asha Prem has been teaching classical Indian dance in St. Louis since 1976. She also teaches in the Washington University Performing Arts Department, where she has been for decades.
