Mother Jones 180th Birthday

MOTHER JONES MUSEUM HOSTS Second Annual May Day Event April 29

Celebrate the 180th birthday of agitator and union organizer Mother Jones, Saturday, April 29, 10-2 in Mt Olive, IL. The museum is located at 215 East Main, just east of Exit 44 on I-55 North from STL.

May Day became Mother’s chosen birthday to represent her rebirth in the labor movement. She became known as “The Most Dangerous Woman in America,” fighting for an 8-hour workday, against child labor, and for fair pay for hard work.

• 10 am: wreath laying ceremony at her gravesite monument.

• 10-2: free tours of museum where new exhibits describe her life and legacy.

• 11, 12, 1: fundraising lunch at Tilley’s, just past the museum. Music, union cake. Celebrate with agitators!

• View “Blood on The Mountain” -- award-winning documentary looking fearlessly at the 150-year history of the U.S. coal industry. Mari-lynn Evans, the film’s director, will be on hand.
