"In Search of a Base" with Dr. Jamal Fawaz

Bilingual International and the Missouri Historical society are glad to present "In Search of a Base" with Dr. Jamal Fawaz in recognition of the United Nations Day in Support for Victims of Torture.

Psychiatrist and author Dr. Jamal Fawaz discusses the innate human need to fit in, to belong, to find a "base"- specifically, the challenges for immigrants and refugees to find this base in the United States after 9/11. For younger Muslim immigrants and refugees "in search of a base," this identity struggle amongst conflicting cultural and American traditions can be especially daunting. When violence forces an individual to abandon everything they know, the struggle to find their footing in a new environment has the potential to yield less than positive results.

The event will feature a discussion with Dr. Fawaz on his insights into how to create a welcome "base" to those who have suffered greatly, followed by a question and answer session.

Sign language interpretation will be provided at this program.
