Tom Hall with Ethan Leinwand at Joe's Cafe!

Welp, we gotta doozy here! Not one but two St. Louis musician all stars combine for one night of crazy great talent. Tom started playing Joe's about 15 years ago and was there when the patio collapsed! Ethan has played Joe's in the past and was called on stage for a 4 hands with Tom McDermott. These guys have been on stage together in other venues in the past and know each other well. They both work a lot and have a lot going on. Traveling, moving and shaking. Playing with this guy, that gal, and those people. For the Joe's Show we are gonna bring in a piano, have these two sit on the stage proper and let 'er loose. We don't ever tell the musicians what to do and with these guys, heck, they could play for three days straight without stopping with all the tunes they know. Two hours will allow them to touch upon a few of the dozens of tunes they have mastered. It's a 2 for 1 special as these are both great band leaders and players.

Normal Joe's Rules: Doors 7:00, Show 8:00. Sets go from 8-9 and 9:30 - 10:30. $10 entry, no ATM or cards. Bring your own food and drink. Only soda, water and popcorn for sale. Do not park on Kingsbury, park on Des Peres only. Please do not talk during the music. This is a listening venue. Talking and smoking outside please.

Tom’s music was originally based on blues mentors Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Blind Blake and Rev. Gary Davis to name only a few. He has since broadened his repertoire to include eclectic fingerstyle guitar, clawhammer banjo and Irish tenor banjo. This encompasses music from the Americas to Ireland, Madagascar, Argentina and whatever suits his fancy.

Tom’s playing has brought him acclaim from appearances on National Public Radio’s “Good Evening America” with Noah Adams to the stages he’s shared with The Neville Brothers, Count Basie, Lightin’ Hopkins, Albert King, Guy Clark and many others. He currently plays solo and with Ethan Leinwand, a juke-joint piano player from New York.

Ethan Leinwand is a St. Louis-based barrelhouse blues pianist and preservationist. A student of the music’s rich history and varied regional styles, Ethan presents personal interpretations of many of the great (and forgotten) old-time masters. He specializes in St. Louis pre-war piano blues, Texas barrelhouse, Deep South barrelhouse, early Chicago boogie-woogie, and good-time hokum stride. His influences include: Little Brother Montgomery, Black Bob, Jimmy Yancey, Henry Brown, Peetie Wheatstraw, Aaron ‘Pinetop’ Sparks, Albert Ammons, Robert Shaw,Cooney Vaughn, Professor Longhair, and Carl Sonny Leyland.
