About this Media...

  • Director: Several directors
  • Dates: July 7-12, 2012

The 12th annual Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase continues through Thursday, July 12th with an array of choices at Landmark’s Tivoli Theatre. Showcasing local talent, all the selections have St. Louis area writers, directors, editors and/or producers or the works have strong local ties. Compilations of short films appear in programs labeled: documentaries, thrillers, experimental, comedy and relationships.

Each of these programs brings together from seven to twelve works, some made by newcomers with some by talent well known in St. Louis and, in a few cases, internationally as well. Though not available for preview the shorts and other feature-length fiction and nonfiction works promise there’s plenty here; namely, a wide range of topics and themes.

Showing the last evening, Thursday, at 7 p.m. and available for preview, writer/director Jack Snyder’s feature Fatal Call, is billed as a “work-in-progress,” but it is already wonderful. Beautifully shot by Christopher Benson, it moves from one superb composition to another, with intelligent but never distracting camera placement and fluid movement. Skillfully edited by Snyder himself, multiple and overlapping flashbacks stitch together the intriguing, tense story of Mitch (Jason London) on the run from the first scene to the last. Beginning with attention grabbing credits, the twists and turns keep this masterful production hurrying forward without sacrificing character development.

It’s great fun to see St. Louis businesses, parks, and other locations in these films and to recognize so many talented actors and filmmakers working right here. Many of the Showcase events include a post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers. Descriptions are provided on line. The last day of the Showcase, Thursday, July 12th, concludes with a closing-night awards party at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room for attendees 21 and over. The best Showcase films will be honored with awards from the St. Louis Film Critics Association.
