A passionate student of Chinese language and culture, Washburn recently completed her 12th tour of the far east, tracing parts of the Silk Road, bringing her clawhammer banjo-driven music to places that surely have never heard it before. And with her musical partner Kai Welch, she absorbs the spirit and expressions of Chinese folk culture and stretches her own contemporary take on the music of Appalachia and more.
For this live at KDHX session, Washburn and Welch play three songs from their most recent album, "City of Refuge," peeling back the almost chamber pop layers of that album, and finding the pure essence: Two voices, two instrumentalists, one moving sound.
