The Kentucky-based singer, songwriter and classically trained cellist has recorded as part of the experimental old time group the Sparrow Quartet and with dusky folk songster Daniel Martin Moore. In 2011, he released the solo album Inclusions, a work that brings his trademark pizzicato grooves into a world of witty, warm and observant songs, somewhere between Paul Simon and Loudon Wainwright III. His commitment to political and environmental justice for the people of Appalachia isn’t just talk; he’s been intimately involved with progressive nonprofits like Appalachian Voices and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth and recently embarked on a “Ditch the Van” tour of the US, traveling from gig to gig, with cello in tow, by bicycle.
For this Live at KDHX session, Sollee fronts a small combo of light percussion, violin, cello and voice, in arrangements that let his high tenor sail and underrated dynamics and tension of his songs build beautifully.
