The members of Bumpus came together in Chicago, Ill. over ten years ago with the idea of creating a modern-day version of Sly and the Family Stone. Much like their musical heroes they have created a new fusion of pop, funk, gospel and soul, using elements of each genre without merely imitating their predecessors. The band’s progression through the past decade has brought about many changes in personnel, but Bumpus's reputation for live performances filled with energy and palpable soul has kept it as a mainstay in the Chicago music scene.
The diversity of the band's sound has helped them play with a wide variety of artists, including Dr. John, Maceo Parker, the Roots, and Jurassic 5, along with noted jam bands Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and Robert Walters’ 20th Congress. The band is currently a seven-piece collective that shares songwriting equally amongst its members and can be seen playing around the Chicago area on a weekly basis.
