With albums like Cheatin' Heart Attack (his debut) and The Truckin' Sessions (Vol 1 and 2) and songs like "Country My Ass" and "Blessed or Damned," Watson pays homage to greats like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, and holds nothing back when criticizing the mainstream country establishment. He'd be easy to dismiss as a crank, if his own skills -- as a guitarist, as a singer and a songwriter -- weren't so formidable. His most recent album, Carryin' On, finds the Austin native doing just that, facing down the travails and tragedies of his recent past with a life-affirming honky tonk vengeance.
