For their 2010 album Sugar, the Athens, Ga. rockers of Dead Confederate get down to the nitty, gritty and grungy, with a suite of short, loud songs that pack a heavyweight punch. For its Live at KDHX session, the band eased into an acoustic set but still landed plenty of hooks.

Fronted by two songwriters and singers, Hardy Morris and Brantley Senn, the band can make both hazy dirges and ear-splitting psychedelia sound immediate and original, while still somehow retaining a certain Southern atmosphere. Bathed in reverb and sturdy rock progressions, the songs "Run From the Gun" and "Shocked to Realize" sound like snapshots from some strange, dark, fleeting dream.
