Emily Wells is a musician working valiantly to undermine any sort of classification. Her work is beautiful and unsettling in the best way.

She ventures boldly into uncertain territory at the crossroads of the expansive and complex genres of classical, folk and, most surprisingly, electronica with a touch of hip hop. Trained as a classical violinist, Wells experiments with a varied array of instrumentation incorporating all manner of sounds into her music.

Though not quite as epic, Wells' layered compositions, technical proficiency and vocal stylings recall the work of Joanna Newsom. Newsom and Wells both work in whimsical aural landscapes, but Wells undercuts her softer side with harder beats and judicious sampling. Her voice is fragile and sinuous with enough of an abrasive edge to keep things interesting. It’s hard to pull away once you get drawn into the unique gravity of Wells' melodies.
