This New York City group produces a sound that makes every dirty south rapper wish they combined the divergent styles of Bluegrass and Hip-Hop instead of conning some Top 40 country singer into making a guest appearance. Rench, the founder, leader and producer of the band, combined these two styles after hearing the beats and rhymes of Run D.M.C as a child on the streets and hours spent listening to his parents' Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson vinyl.
Rench, and his baby known as Gangstagrass, have earned acclaim with "Long Hard Times to Come," the theme song for the FX original series "Justified," and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music in 2010.
This grand experiment in fusion has been rolling since 2006, and on a recent roll through St. Louis Gangstagrass brought their fusion into the studios of KDHX. The group blasted through four tracks that exemplify their bravery in breaking down the walls that separate the music of the Appalachia and the music born to the streets of New York City's five boroughs.
