The four-piece band -- helmed by zany frontman Montag the Magnificent, aka Ian Hansson -- stays aurally traditional while constantly pushing the boundaries of performance. Whether it be creating a live, alternate surfed-out soundtrack to a screening of "Point Break," performing alongside a Talking Heads cover band on New Year's Eve or crafting jokey, beach-infused Christmas songs, such as "I'm Gonna Get Drunk For Christmas," the Great White Caps always bring the party.
For this Live at KDHX essay writer session, the Great White Caps kick off with "Gleaming the Tube," from 2011's "Sting of Death," whereon palm-muted guitar provides a bed for a daring, single-note guitar melody, dynamic splashes of cymbal and fuzzed bass. "Teahupoo Twist" plays like an alternate take on the Champs' "Tequila," complete with a spoken turn-around of the song's title. "Moonlight Beach," from 2012's "Screech Beach!," opens with a leisurely afternoon feel that quickly morphs into a stately Shark Quest-esque jam. "First Wave" ebbs and flows with a taught, toe-tapping energy that, like a riptide, doesn't let go.
