When one of the best country songwriters around invites you to his house to hang out on the back porch and listen to a new song, you don't refuse.

Such was the good fortune of KDHX. Several representatives of the station were in Hayes Carll's hometown of Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest music conference. One thing led to another, and then suddenly there we were, sitting on Hayes' back porch listening to him play a previously unrecorded song, "Drive."

The song speaks of restlessness and a life lived on the figurative road. "Further on and down the road, burning up your life. Always somewhere else to go, just drive, drive, drive." As Carll sings those words in his familiar, gentle drawl, a slight breeze sweeps by. If this man is the subject of his own song, you wouldn't know it. He may have been that restless soul at sometime in the past, but sitting here on the back porch it's clear that he's found his home.
