On the 2009 release The Mountain, newly joined bassist Jesse Ebaugh and drummer Dave Colvin provide the band's customary stripped down backdrop to Wennerstrom's throaty rocker vocals, once described by The Village Voice as "totally arresting." The folksy "Be So Happy" reflects an interest in change as Wennerstrom sings, "I could be so happy, if I just quit bein' sad. I could be so funny, if I just quit bein' a drag." While the band sports a new rhythm section, old schoolers should take heart -- HB continues to deliver the roiling riffs reminiscent of earlier days. The trio played and sang its collective heart out on March 15 at The Pageant.
