British-born singer Jamie Lidell is a one-man, blue-eyed soul wrecking crew -- or at least that's the sound of his 2010 release Compass, a multi-genre amalgam of shape-shifting vocals, glitchy grooves and heavy pop that suggests his previous collaborations with Beck and Grizzly Bear weren't just passing fancies.

Lidell released his first EP Freekin' the Frame in 1997, and ever since he's been challenging those who prefer their soul music confined to the borders of Motown and Stax. On Compass, he enlists a variety of guest musicians, including Feist, Beck, Nikka Costa, Gonzales, and members of Grizzly Bear and Wilco. The result is what the Boston Globe calls "the indie-rock answer to Sly Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On," an apt description of an album that veers and swerves and grinds through a heady terrain of pop and electronic music.
