Jay Farrar's love of country music is no secret, but in recent years he's fallen hard for the classic honky-tonk sound of the '50s and '60s. But it's not just the sound that's currently inspiring him.

As the voice and songwriter behind "Honky Tonk," the latest album from Son Volt, Farrar works within the parameters of hardcore country songs, pushing at their limits, channeling their themes and images, while still remaining as expressive and insightful -- about life, love, time and change -- as he's always been. His gift for expressing elusive truths in a single, flashing line has never been stronger.

For this Live at KDHX session, Farrar performs three songs from the 2013 release "Honky Tonk," but he does so solo acoustic, with just voice, guitar and harmonica. As he revealed during the session, the songs he writes and records are "always evolving," and this session is proof positive of just that.
