The Chicago-based neo-soulsters JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound may surprise you with songs from their latest release, "Howl." Synths and glittery guitars help give tracks such as "Before You Die" and "Married For A Week" a pop makeover.

Still at the center of the group's music are lyrics peppered with black humor and one-liners, as frontman JC Brooks airs grievances and makes confessions. "If I didn't love you, I would never say," he sings in "Security." In "Married For A Week," he admits, "Now I fool around with every stranger you know."

Relationships can be messy, and Brooks reminds us of that with a blast of emotion. Straight-from-the-gut lyrics and a freshly-evolving sound let JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound do what they do best -- keep the party going.
