Led by easygoing, hard-belting soul man JC Brooks, the group recently signed to Bloodshot Records for an album that's due out this fall. The Chicago band has been busy this spring and summer, working on a production for the Tony Award-winning musical Passing Strange, getting a slot on the inaugural Wilco Solid Sound Festival and touring across the states. For this Live at KDHX session, the band revisits the title track to its full length debut, The Beat of Our Own Drum, and introduces two new songs: "Missing Things" and "Straight Lines." The former could be an outtake from the Band's Music From Big Pink, especially with guest musician Gabriel Stutz sitting in on pedal steel. The latter is a ska-dub-driven rocker that demonstrates just how versatile this band can be.
