Sharing stories that seem too mature for 24-year-old to possess, Jessica Lea Mayfield has been recording dark, eloquent alt-country since her late teens, and played in her family's bluegrass band for years before that.

A native of Kent, Ohio, Mayfield combines a sultry voice with a distinctly contemporary flare. Her ties to country and folk make her songs poignant, emotive and moving, and collaborations with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and members of Dr. Dog add edginess and thundery guitars. Mayfield's newer music falls especially heavy on the latter elements, with lots of crashes and riffs, with Dave Grohl named as a major influence.

When she stopped by KDHX, Mayfield hardly calmed things down, especially on "Pure Stuff" with its loud, percussive opening. Even on such songs, however, Mayfield's narrative is as important as the grungy rock sound. The connection and collision between the two elements is what makes Mayfield's music so dynamic.
