With or without his Southern-fried band, Mofro, JJ Grey can easily serve up some soulful and funky tunes alone on the guitar.

Releasing records since the early 2000s, Grey and Mofro are supporting their latest album, "This River," which is full of swampy rockers and slow burning soul ballads. In this session, Grey stands out in a superb solo performance.

What makes JJ Grey stand out is the power of his songwriting. His records are not full of just superficial glitz, but are built up from sparse soul/rock songs to full and lush arrangements that make you want to boogie, or do your best Otis Redding impression. But the strength of Grey's songs really comes out in these solo renderings. He's of the rare breed of songwriter and performer that can get funky all on his own.
