As the blues head into the 21st century, the music needs more artists like John Mooney. Even as he rides the sure and strong rails of tradition, he remains as forward-looking as a bullet train from New Orleans to Chicago. Hear the guitar slinger and singer work a mean resonator slide during a live solo session on Blursday.

Smitten by the blues as a teenager, Mooney met and learned from the great Son House, before going on to work with just about any New Orleans blues and funk artist you can name, and finally forming his own group, the Bluesiana Band. Mooney's most recent release, Big Ol' Fiya, smacks with all the grit and grease of the Louisiana rhythm and blues tradition.
