A founding member of the Be Good Tanyas, Holland released her first solo album, "Catalpa," in 2003, and went on to work with a wide range of artists, including David Gray, Sage Francis and even Booker T. Jones (the two recorded a version of "What a Wonderful World"). This year she released her fifth and most evocative album, "Pint of Blood," which demonstrates the full power of her smokey voice and her understanding of the deep songwriter blues tradition (don't miss the cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Rex's Blues").
For this Live at KDHX session, Holland performs three songs from "Pint of Blood," all solo and electric (just her and her Les Paul guitar). "Honey Girl" soars and the descends on the strength of that voice; "Gold and Yellow" builds on a slurred image of an exotic mermaid (perhaps the one featured on "Pint of Blood"'s album jacket) and then travels far beyond that fantasy; and "Remember" shows her underrated, dark wit: "It brings a smile to my lips when I think of your first."
