As co-leader (if the word leader is used loosely) of the Mekons and the go-to producer and graphic artist for Chicago's insurgent country scene, the Welsh-born songwriter, guitarist and polemicist has been changing the way we listen to punk rock and hillbilly music for over 30 years. The cover of his most recent album, Old Devils, features a spooky old time music family gathered around a microphone with an industrial landscape in the background and a rubber duck in the foreground. Who knows what the art means, but the music speaks loudly of memories, justice, war and the never-ending struggles of class and ambition.
