Think of Junk Culture as a human aggregator of pop music. With a dizzying array of samples, Deepak Mantena makes dance music that transcends pastiche.

Though Mantena's nom de beat echoes an album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, the Oxford, Mississippi native isn't much for a nostalgia. Whether performing live with Nitin Mantena on drums and samples, or creating dense and expressive beatscapes of found sound, grinding glitch and pop glitz, Mantena keeps the feel thoroughly contemporary and irresistibly danceable. Junk Culture is set to release a new album, West Coast, in October on indie label Illegal Art (the joint behind recent releases by Girl Talk and Steinski among others) and performed at Firebird on June 29, 2009.
