Don't call Magic City a supergroup. The band may feature past and present members of Leadville, Rough Shop, Bad Folk, Theodore and In Medias Res, but together Larry Bulawsky, Adam Hesed, Anne Tkach, Jonas Hamon and Sam Meyer have distilled the elements of what's sometimes called the South City sound -- punk, blues, garage rock, alt-country -- into a dark, stormy and novel essence.
For this Live at KDHX session, the band plays three new songs from its debut LP Les Animaux Épouvantables. "St. Paul" features Bulawsky in his most breathless and tormented moan , "Speckled Bird" deconstructs gospel mysticism with twisted guitar lines and "Animal Hair" just gets as messy and primal as rock & roll can get.
