On the surface, the band's debut, Memphis (named for the group's hometown), often seems to be an explicit homage to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, from the sometimes jazzy, intricate arrangements and grand strings and choir vocals to the (almost) never-ending summer of its libretto. And yet Bennett Foster and friends still get off on the rush of power pop, cutting loose on songs like "Superball" and "Hey Boy." And across the album, a spirit of risk-taking and fun counters the retro '60s aesthetic.
