About this Media...

  • Date Recorded: April 23, 2011
  • Artist / Band: Matt Rowland
  • Hosting Show: Backroads
  • Sound: Dan Kinney

Matt Rowland, who usually fronts the eponymous Matt Rowland Band, laid it bare for this KDHX session, working with just his voice and guitar. It's more than enough.

Rowland started the band in 2005 with Joe Winters on percussion and Steve Ranney on bass. At the time, the three were students at the University of Missouri-Columbia, but since then they've left the halls of academia behind and have become a regular fixture on the St. Louis music scene.

Their sound combines elements of jazz, blues, funk and rock -- think Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Stevie Wonder, with a dash of Curtis Mayfield tossed into the mix. Deep grooves, tight vocal harmonies and guitar work that ranges from mellow acoustic strumming to stuttering rhythm licks to stinging single-note leads. You could call it fusion, but you probably shouldn't. Like the band says on its Facebook page: "There's more to music than what's on the radio."
