As a group of young, scruffy dudes from northern California, Monophonics have no business grooving as hard as they do. Those sounds belong to another time and another place.

That the San Francisco-based sextet can lock in and light up the speakers as powerfully as it does -- and with such seeming ease -- is a testament to its musicianship as well as to the power of soul-funk. That sound is based upon heavy-but-nimble bass, groaning analog organ and crisp drums playing as a single unit, and focused on that sweet spot in the meter that compels hips to sway and feet to shuffle. And while the genesis of this form is now decades past, contemporary acts like Monophonics prove that it's as fresh and relevant as ever.

To the core trio of bass/organ/drums, Monophonics add trumpet, tenor sax and rhythm guitar. When each member throws his spice into the pot, what comes out is always tasty.
