Featuring singer and guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer and pianist Sam Meister, mr. Gnome builds mini-rock operas around ghostly loops and even more ghostly melodies, anchored in Barille's high, tortured wail and Meister's jittery, trashy percussive style. In the space of a single session or even a single song, the band shifts from from artsy punk to electro pop, from crushing progged-out jams to lilting spaced-out cabaret explorations. Experimental music has rarely sounded so emotional or so compelling.
