There's something deeply disconcerting about the music of mr. Gnome. Arch and jagged, primal and poetic, fragile and explosive, the Cleveland duo proves that opposites really do attract.

Featuring singer and guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer and pianist Sam Meister, mr. Gnome builds mini-rock operas around ghostly loops and even more ghostly melodies, anchored in Barille's high, tortured wail and Meister's jittery, trashy percussive style. In the space of a single session or even a single song, the band shifts from from artsy punk to electro pop, from crushing progged-out jams to lilting spaced-out cabaret explorations. Experimental music has rarely sounded so emotional or so compelling.

88.1 KDHX welcomes mr. Gnome to Plush for a concert on April 11.
