Dropping the needle on a Nick Waterhouse record not only fills the room with sound, it also turns it into a working time machine, bound for Memphis circa 1959.

Musician, producer and scholar of soul, Nick Waterhouse was brought up in the last place you'd expect -- Huntington Beach, California. And although he may be from Surf City USA, his sound certainly is not. No sir, he's as real and true as anyone who ever laid soul to wax in the early Stax and Sun Records days. With smoky vocals reminiscent of midnight in a juke joint and a backing band that can really lay it down, his lo-fi rock 'n' roll is sure to elicit excited foot stomping and a yearning for the good old days.

One EP and one LP into his career, Waterhouse is starting to make a name for himself amongst a contingent that's recreating old school soul and rock 'n' roll for younger ears. His sound lies somewhere in between the soul of Mayer Hawthorne and the blues of the Black Keys, but still remains his own. Waterhouse is a reminder that sometimes we need to go back to move forward.
