Rocky Votolato is not simply a boy from Dallas or a Seattle artist who cut his musical teeth in the mid ’90s. He is both. His frank folk writing services sound combines sincere lyrics with deeply melodic motifs that reflect his Southern birth with his Northwestern upbringing.

You may not guess, listening to his latest album, True Devotion, that his current career proceeded from a Seattle-based punk rock band called Waxwing, but the influence is traceable, like footprints in a forest. With quiet restraint, a guitar and harmonica, Votolato emits an almost minstrel aura -- reminiscent of deep South troubadours -- while retaining all of his edge that comes from spending formative years in an indie scene. The blue-collar, organic songs, enhanced by his natural and unaffected voice, are as homey and reflective as sitting on a porch swing, watching the days go by.
