Whether he's singing a song written over 100 years ago or penning his own tunes, St. Louis native Ryan Spearman draws on his expansive knowledge of Americana and folk to create a living, breathing history of traditional music.

Multi-instrumentalist Ryan Spearman is one of those rare musicians that can take the sounds of America's past and bring them into the present as if they had never aged a day. Music is his all-consuming passion; when he's not performing for an audience he's teaching at the Folk School or with the Green Strum project, conducting workshops on old-time music or showing people how to build instruments from found items in an attempt to combine music and sustainability.

Remaining authentic to the roots of your musical past and keeping the traditions fresh and viable in the present is no simple task. And while Spearman's music recalls what we usually think of as simpler times, his lyrics remind us that although the times have changed, the struggle remains the same.
