The two singers and songwriters blend their contrasting vocal styles -- Guthrie's tart and twangy alto and Irion's rasped and rugged tenor -- to tell a single story and make a singular brand of country and folk-influenced pop. On this year's "Bright Examples," the veteran duo, who first met in 1999, dips into psychedelia, soul, Beatles-esque pop, pub rock and, of course, unadorned folk. Though backed on the album by ace musicians, including members of Vetiver, the Jayhawks and the Cardinals, Guthrie and Irion demonstrate on this Live at KDHX session that a stripped down session still plays to their musical strengths -- and appeals to listeners of all ages.
