With a certifiable R&B legend like Charles Walker leading the way, the Dynamites could have just coasted along on his coattails. Instead, the Nashville band builds expansive, original compositions and turns the funk up to 11.

Formed in 2005 by guitarist, songwriter and producer Bill Elders (known by his stage name Leo Black), the Dynamites depart from soul revival peers like the Dap-Kings in taking considerable chances with the James Brown funk template. On the 2010 long player Burn It Down, the band injects psychedelic sounds, Motown hooks and heavy does of politics into the always massive but intricate groove. And, as always, Charles Walker soaks the proceedings with a voice as passionate as it is proficient.
