Like Bill Monroe and Mark Twain, John Hartford was a true American original. Now members of his essaywriter touring group have reunited as the John Hartford Stringband to pay tribute to the late songwriter and old-time music master.

Genres like bluegrass and country music are too narrow to describe the playful, bittersweet and history-informed vision of Hartford. So it is with JHSB, whose large band configuration includes Bob Carlin on banjo, Mike Compton on mandolin, Matt Combs on fiddle, Mark Schatz on bass and Chris Sharp on guitar, with in-studio assistance from progressive bluegrass luminaries Bela Fleck, Alison Brown and Tim O'Brien. The band's 2010 release, Memories of John, was nominated for Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk category.
