The paradox of the New Familiars is the way they take that most tradition-centric of genres, bluegrass, and overturn comfortable expectations, while still sounding down home and accessible. The band joined the Musical Merry-Go-Round for music and conversation.

At first listen, you might file this Charlotte, North Carolina band with post-newgrassers like Chatham County Line and Old Crow Medicine Show. And you wouldn't be wrong, but the New Familiars aren't afraid to plug in, turn up, and even give the drummer some. If their electrified, old-timey, and genuinely gorgeous version of the Motown standard "My Girl" doesn't make you want to get better acquainted then nothing will.
