Washed Out, who is also known by the name Ernest Greene, has come a long way since he started writing beats in his bedroom while still living with his parents. Since those early days, he has released two critically acclaimed albums, and has signed to Sub Pop Records, the iconic label that brought Nirvana to fame. Fusing a hip-hop mentality with the laid back vocals and pulsing synthesizers that have come to define chillwave, Greene's tone simultaneously fits the genre and yet manages to be unique. It is no wonder that songs like "Feel it All Around" have started to bridge the gap between hipsters and the mainstream audience.
In this Live at KDHX performance, Greene packs in all of the chill melodies and playful grooves that have made him such a success, kicking things off with "It All Feels Right," the first single from his latest album, and the song delivered a much needed summer flair in this increasingly cold weather.
"New Theory," from his first EP, slowed things down a bit before moving on to the fan favorite, "Feel it All Around." While the recorded version of the track has an intimate and reserved nature, the echoing riffs and down beat rhythm in this live performance take on an even more reflective quality.
Greene closed out the set on a high note with "All I Know," one of his most danceable tracks to date. While chillwave music has not always been known to translate into great live performances, Washed Out's songs truly shine in this intimate setting.
